The Challenge

In San Miguel de Allende — often called “the best city in the world” — inequality runs deep.

63% of residents have only a 9th-grade education or less, and 43% live in moderate or extreme poverty.

Families whose children are being admitted to Centro Infantil de los Ángeles (CILA) survive on less than $300 USD per month. For these parents, especially single mothers, finding safe, affordable childcare is nearly impossible. Without it, many must choose between earning an income or keeping their children safe

At Centro Infantil de los Ángeles, we believe that early childhood education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty in our communities.

How You Can Help

At CILA we believe every child deserves to begin with advantages, not obstacles; here we create opportunities, build confidence, and ignite futures.
The Challenge

Across Mexico, only 4.8% of children under age 5 have access to early childhood education

and an even smaller percentage for families in extreme poverty. This lack of access has lifelong consequences. Research shows that early education is the foundation for all future learning.

“Early Childhood Education stimulates brain development through storytelling, music and rhythm, art, sensory play, climbing, and role play.”  National Association for the Education of Young Children.

As pediatric expert Dr. Andrew S. Garner explains, “The early environment literally becomes embedded in the brain and changes its architecture.”

At CILA, we are determined to change this reality — giving every child, regardless of circumstance, a safe, loving, and enriching start in life.
